Wireless Security Solutions - Fortinet

Fortinet Wireless Solution is a unique high performance WLAN indoor/outdoor deployment solution with UTM, IPS, and application control, providing identity-based granular policy control with single pane of glass management.Fortinet Wireless solution leverages any compatible FortiGate/FortiWiFi appliance as a WLAN controller.

Fortinet wireless solution included the following access point types:

  • Indoor (Thin) Access Points: Fortinet's indoor access points support up to 16 simultaneous SSIDs with automatic provisioning to provide optimal wireless performance for any size organization. These thin access points provide the latest WPA2 strong Authentication and hardware encryption for maximum speed. The thin access points also support 802.3af Power over Ethernet (POE) for simplified, fast deployment.
  • Outdoor (Thin) Access Points: Fortinet's rugged outdoor access points provide dual concurrent radios capable of up to 27dBm TX power using supplied omni-directional antennas. They also support up to 16 simultaneous SSIDs, providing both scanning superior Wi-Fi coverage for secure client access. These outdoor access points also ship with 802.3at Power over Ethernet (POE) injector and mounting brackets, for simplified deployment. Fortinet outdoor access points are designed for many types of outdoor deployments such as golf courses, arenas, and shopping malls.
  • Indoor (Thick) Access Points: Fortinet's indoor thick access points operate as dedicated WLAN controllers and/or access points. As a standalone WLAN solution, these access points provide coverage for smaller sites of up to 300m2 (3000 ft2). You can extend coverage by deploying additional FortiAP thin APs. The FortiWiFi consolidated security platform delivers the full range of Fortinet's unified threat management features, including application control, IPS, and traffic shaping, thus eliminating the need to deploy a secondary security gateway.

Fortinet Wireless Solution Features:

  • Robust Rogue AP Detection, Correlation And Suppression : The integrated 'on-wire' detection technology quickly discovers rogue APs and sends out an alert. For those organizations affected by PCI-DSS compliance mandates for proactive monitoring and suppression of rogue APs, Fortinet's WLAN solution addresses a key regulatory requirement.
  • Distributed Automatic Radio Resource Provisioning (DARRP) : Through DARRP, each FortiAP unit autonomously and periodically determines the channel that is best suited for wireless communications. The distributed ARRP feature allows FortiAP units to select their channel so that they do not interfere with each other in large-scale deployments where multiple access points have overlapping radio ranges. Furthermore, Fortinet's implementation of DARRP simplifies operations by removing dependency on client software or hardware.
  • Secure Guest Access With Ease Of Connectivity: Fortinet provides captive portal guest access by invoking identity-based policies for the specific wireless SSID and therefore provides communication privacy. To offer flexibility, captive portal users may authenticate to an external or local database. Moreover, organizations that require another layer of security may opt to deploy 2-factor authentication using FortiToken.
  • Fast Roaming For Operations Continuity : The FortiGate platform supports a FortiAP associated with a client to bridge to other APs and pre-authenticate that client to the "next" AP to which it might roam. When the client roams, it takes advantage of advanced negotiated authentication and quickly associates with the next AP. The capability ensures that mobile wireless clients such as smart phones and tablets that support pre-authentication can continue to wirelessly communicate without connection delays or disruptions.
  • Application-Based Quality Of Service : In additional to supporting 802.11e QoS for Voice, Video, Data, and Background traffic, FortiOS delivers applications-based wireless LAN quality of service, allowing you to differentiate between business applications. For example, if policy mandates, desktop sharing applications may be given a higher priority than video streaming from Youtube. Furthermore these applications may be subject to rate-limiting policies which preserve the bandwidth for other business-critical applications.
  • Complete Range Of Wireless Controllers : Fortinet offers the widest selection of wireless controllers in the industry. More than 20 FortiGate and FortiWiFi platform models provide wireless LAN management capabilities, which enables rightsizing the controller to your network needs. By using your existing FortiGate as the controller, you can substantially reduce WLAN deployment costs by eliminating the need or a separate wireless controller.
